Bupa leaders become first Mental Health First Aiders in UK
Bupa UK is proud to be leading the way as its Insurance Executive Team becomes the first executive team in the UK to train as Mental Health First Aiders.
The team took part in a two-day course with Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England. They are now all trained to provide first aid to people who are experiencing mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis. It takes the total number of mental health first aiders in the UK Insurance department to 50, with all physical first aiders and people managers also due to receive training.
Bupa Insurance CEO Alex Perry took part in the two-day course. He said: “The course was demanding and, at times, quite emotional training to go through. I was struck by the fact that everyone in the room had either been impacted themselves, or in some way by a friend, relative, colleague who had struggled with their mental health.
“Mental health is one of the biggest people issues that businesses face today. Bupa’s recent research shows that for almost a third (29%) of UK businesses, mental health is now a bigger issue among employees than physical illnesses. We know that early recognition, diagnosis and treatment all lead to more positive outcomes with mental health issues, so in UK Insurance business we are working hard to make sure we can give our people and our clients the best support possible in this important area.”
MHFA England is aiming to train one in 10 of the population in England in mental health first aid skills.
Jaan Madan, Workplace Lead at MHFA England, said: “I am delighted that Bupa has made such a purposeful connection to the subject and shown outstanding commitment to mental health, creating even healthier workplaces across the company. This top-down approach will help build the perfect platform to widen the reach and importance of mental health at work with Bupa partners, customers and networks.”
