78-year-old jazz lover has jazz night brought to him

Summary

Bupa Southlands in Harrogate arranged a ‘Jazz Night’ for John Trevor Lee, a 78-year-old resident and keen Jazz lover, who can no longer attend Jazz events outside the home due to his fear of falling.

John, a former hairdresser, grew up in Scunthorpe with his brother. The two of them would go out to listen to a new Jazz band every week. John’s love of Jazz stemmed from his first time hearing it on the radio, when he became “Jazz crazy”. At the age 14, he went on to learn how to play jazz at Dean School of Music in Scunthorpe.

Bringing the Jazz Night to John, the home organised a cocktail and canape reception, followed by an evening of Jazz with one of John’s favourite, the Savannah Jazz Band. John, residents and guests enjoyed dancing and reminiscing with one another.

General Manager, Susan Sowden, said: “We are delighted to have been able to bring the Jazz night to John, for all residents, staff and guests to enjoy. We don’t like residents’ fears or illnesses to get in the way of doing what they enjoy, so we work closely with our Activities Coordinator to make events like this happen.”

John said: “What a fantastic night it has been. I love jazz and the Savannah Jazz Band are a favourite of mine, so I’m so pleased to have been able to enjoy it all from the comfort of my home.”

Bupa Southlands Care Home offers a wide range of nursing and personal care for residents with a range of conditions, including dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.
